Two Acknowledgments
Howl makes a long-list.
Yesterday I received what looked, at first pass, to be a form rejection of a collection of short stories I submitted to the Leapfrog Global Fiction Prize. I kept reading.
“So, who were these lucky little devils in the posted long-list of titles?” I wondered bitterly. And there among the nine novels and collections of short stories was my very own Howl.
I had to read it twice and then forty-seven more times after that. “It’s an honor just to be chosen,” the nominees say. Reporting from the front lines, I can say that it is. This is a deeply rewarding piece of news, whatever may or may not develop from here. Most likely, the next phase is freefall, tears, and gnashing of teeth.
If you’re not familiar with the world of literary prizes, they move from long-list —> short-list —> finalists —> “alert the press.” The winner of this one will be published both here and in the UK.
And while I’m on the subject of personal victories, I’ll add that several weeks ago I received notification that an individual short story of mine, Pigeons, made it to the second round in a celebrated international fiction contest, but sadly it did not progress from there. That said, they thought enough of the story to tell me personally. That contest asked that I not share its name until they announce the long- and short-lists. Or until I burst. Anyway, very big contest, and again, a huge honor. But there’s something deeply gratifying about a collection of stories getting attention.
I share all of this here because, obviously, I’m filled with pride and more than a dollop of see-I-told-you-so-world, but also because the readers who clicked Like and appreciated my writing here on Substack gave me the kick in the bottom to get my work out there.
Thanks to each of you.

Exciting news! Very cool.
