In 2001, I began writing my children "Christmas Eve Letters." These letters were filed away to be delivered annually starting the year they moved away from home. Here's the story (and two snippets.)
After reading this, all I can say is, that I have a high need to wrap my skinny arms around you and give you a big bear hug. Then , have you unwrap the gift I brought you for your office desk, a large box of Kleenex.
And while I was visiting , let’s say, on a Christmas Eve, I would make you play this Crosby and Bowie video.
Hug you right back, Lor. I will re-watch this old chestnut of a video when I kick off 2025's Letter this evening. I'm less weepy writing the letters with the children gone, and the letters have begun to sound more like Polonius than a young father, but a little Kleenex might be useful all the same.
Maybe this year I'll have a 12 Days of Christmas with all of my 2025 anxieties blended in. "Twelve Trumps a Trumpin'" "Six Judges Judgin'" "Five Agents Icin' "And a Ballroom of Silver and Gold!"
I can honestly say if it came down to it, and I had to erase from Time everything I've ever written, the last things to go would be those letters. Pretty much all that matters to me is in them. Having said that, I have to write this year's tonight and I'm already dreading it.
I’m glad to revisit this. I loved it the first time and I’m still in awe. (I laughed, I cried.) “Part goodbye,” indeed. Every moment is precious and I’ve missed so much. But our son, now 24, is with us this year and I will cherish him, our family, and all the memories. I’d wish you good luck with the letter but you don’t need it. Cheers! ❤️💚
