It is 1973. Red's father joins the infamous record club, a pencil is described, the lad steals magazines from the barber shop, and all hell breaks loose in the household. The Pips have arrived.
Idle comments like that are where the mischief starts. :-)
I kind of remember that there were lots of records that honestly weren't that appealing. Obviously, musical taste is the key ingredient, but I have the vague memory of trying to find the free ones and wondering if there would be enough to sustain the membership. Maybe I really liked rock and the selections were more eclectic?
Having said that, I also remember being in record stores and wanting to buy half the records in the racks, so maybe at least some of this is on Columbia House.
I built up a really good collection of “alternative” CDs from a Columbia House haul ca. 1992, and a good collection of tapes a couple years before that. R.E.M., the B-52s, The Cure, etc.
A couple duds, too, but at the time, for me, a lot of great stuff.
I am SO tempted to write "so do I," but actually I do know. Since it is just the two of us reading this far, I can tell you that there will be three more "parts" which any normal writer would call "chapters." And, I promise you, we will learn more about both of your questions. I just need to get some coffee in me so that I can start "Part III"
Also also, have you seen the Coen Bros. movie A Serious Man? A father whose son signed up is seriously baffled by receiving “Santana Abraxas” in the mail.
Also also also, “Whips” is derived from “White Pips”? (Don’t answer that.)
You have your answer, btw. Although there is an asterisk. Whips* :-)
We can neither confirm nor deny.
Lots of wonderfully private matters going on in this household.
Also if you were diligent about canceling, Columbia House was an AMAZING deal.

I need to know what happens to Red next.

That would be quite the first record to receive. Quite the cover. (And what an album.)
