Jack London is my favorite author (coincidentally, he wrote a book about his own experiences as a hobo).

David, that book was the seed for this, you won't be surprised to read here. I think the book probably launched a 1000 hobos, one of whom is my Jack London in this story. He'd been on my mind because of White Fang. I re-read Cry of the Wolf and White Fang a few months ago. I'd forgotten what a great storyteller he is. There's a scene in White Fang where White Fang gets in a fight with a bulldog. Absolutely an incredible piece of both cinematic and psychological writing. I was a little let down by the end of White Fang, but that sequence is just unforgettable. What other Jack London do you recommend I read?

His novels and short stories are all wonderfully vivid. In non-fiction, he also wrote a memoir about his struggles with alcoholism, "John Barleycorn", a depiction of a sea voyage in "The Cruise Of The Snark", and a documentary expose of poverty in London, England, "The Children Of The Abyss", as well as writing on boxing (he was an instigator of the famous heavyweight title fight between Jack Johnson and James Jeffries).

“There ain’t no puppy” sounds like a key Stoic principle.

Man, you’re good.

Lighten up, Adam. Sometimes there's a puppy.

I loved this one. You have an uncanny, savant-like ability to just jump into any genre and wear that skin like it's your own.

Thanks, Ben. I wonder if I'll do that less as the stories move along. We'll see. I don't feel like I'm trying to do it like a writing gimmick. It's just that different stories seem to have different voices. I think that's what is going on anyway. Actually, I have no fucking idea.

What a great story Adam! I loved this... and Jack London, would you believe both White Fang and Cry of the Wolf are on the recommended literature shelf in my fourth year (14/15 yr olds) college classes, translated to French of course!
