Konnichiwa, and Kanpai! (used often in my home when sake cups are in hand). A very close friend of mine is a professor of Japanese literature, yet the only words I know besides those, are related to rolling maki—which I am surprisingly proficient at. I hope you had an incredible time and collected volumes of forever memories, with perhaps a couple of stories simmering on the burner.🎉🎂🎈🍱🍣
Had a wonderful time. No idea what memories might persist creatively. But here were two story bullets. They need context but this is what I wrote down;
8. An island in Japan where everyone has an indelible memory.
9. A confrontation with a monster that looks like the Japanese silhouette tree
The scary tree is the tree in my picture. I was imagining how something like that could be terrifying if it moved toward you in a certain way. Monsters are usually boring. I think monsters would be more powerful if they came with utterly new behavioral rules, like if they were plantlike or moved oddly or created sounds every few minutes that was musical enough to suggest consciousness… i think I could make a tree monster.
As for the island of indelible memories, I’m not sure what is there… but something. I’m noticing though the stories are all getting very realistic now.
Happy bday and welcome back. Japan is such a special place. All the feels. (PS that’s likely not a real account. I had “George Saunders” and someone else famous I don’t remember now. . .)
"It is like people from across the world on an island somewhere invented their own culture." Welcome home to you and your beautiful family.
Thanks, Mary. 🙏
Heaven heaven heaven (and Happy Birthday) xx
Happy Birthday Adam! This was fun.
Thanks, Anna. Have you been?
Sweet nostalgia! Gosh, I can feel all the vibes in these photos. Absolute treasures.
And is that THE Ricky Lee Jones?!!!!
Yes! Siren of my youth.
Wowza.
Great photos! And love your comments.
Thanks, Jeanine.
Love all these pics!
Thanks. I love the Return of Dangling Legs Man.
He’s back!
Girls never know how beautiful they are. That photo of the tree? Also a beauty.
(Sometimes women don’t either.) Thank you for liking my tree.
The perspective reminds me a little of a tree Georgia O'Keeffe painted while visiting D.H. Lawrence. You can see it in Hartford at the beautiful Wadsworth Atheneum. https://www.thewadsworth.org/learn/education/virtual-studio/alternative-angles/

Look at you go, girl! Love it.
(Big news this morning, Lor. I'll keep you in the back channel workshopping loop as things progress.)
Cool! In the meantime, I’m deleting my idea just in case.
Too late!

It was real in Japan.
😂 sorry to be a Debbie Downer
