Love that add, “Are you fed up with seeing the huskies walk off with the best of everything?”
You know, Adam, you definitely missed out by not including the Dumbo reference . While I have no knowledge of Brooklyn whatsoever, I did grow up with Dumbo. Him, I know and love. Years ago, I was holding the vinyl LP in my hand, yes, my parents used to play it on their huge stereo console. I was curious as to why the baby elephant of my childhood had such a derogatory name, so of course I looked it up. I remember seeing that Dumbo had a bit of significance in Brooklyn.
“At the time I thought of the story I was sitting on a bench at lower right”. That is exactly how I pictured you , sitting in a similar spot , dreaming up this story.
Did you watch Free Solo in the theatre when it first came out, with Alex Honnold?
Oh, also, I did see Free Solo. I was lucky enough to see it on its opening night and the producers did a talk afterwards. He was not there. It kept me up in the night. I’ve considered a story about two climbers on a rope on the face of a cliff like that.
Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Before we bought our place south of there, we lived in DUMBO. It has one of the most photographed streets in New York City. And LOTS of tourists. It was like living in Venice. There is no flying elephant sadly.
What do you mean about the huskies? For the life of me I can’t figure that out!
Yes! Do it. If you have not read the classic; Touching the Void, that would also be a great reference. The movie version was excellent. My husband brought the book home for me to read in 1997, while I was lying in bed with a full cast on my leg from a mountain bike accident in the woods. One of those, here reading this, this guy had it much worse than you did… I just checked, if you haven’t seen it, you can watch for free on Pluto TV, also on Amazon Prime. Break out the popcorn 🍿
I have seen The Alpinist, a couple of times . So many climbers have lost their lives doing what they love, and I suppose that would be the way they would choose to die.
But Marc-André Leclerc, seemed so full of life, gone too soon. Ok, one more, Valley Uprising , a must see.
Well, let me think about that hmm, what DID I mean 🤔. I prefaced the quote with “ Love the add”, oh yeah ( I just went back to take a look) The Charles Atlas
Cartoon, the advertisement in lower right hand corner, “Let Me Prove I Can Make You a New Man!”. There it is, I didn’t have a momentary lapse of reason; Read the first line in the first paragraph!!
I read "huskies" as in dogs and truly had no idea what the reference was! it gets worse: when I first read "add" I thought it was a typo for "ad" somehow.
I can't be trusted to understand English. You have to really spell it out for me. I'm also not sure I did much but skim that ad, having looked at it a thousand times.
Can you imagine that ad today? I don't think a line in it would stand the test of time. But brilliant somehow, too.
Delightful! Including the Otis Redding treat. As I read the story I had that image of Harold Lloyd in “Safety Last!” and even screenshot the iconic images of hanging from the clock hands and climbing on the flagpole before remembering you can out images in comments. Oh well. Thanks for the BTS. Always love a download from your creative mind.
I love the pics. 1920s? A few years earlier, but the same derringer-do. I wish you could post images. A bunch of times I’ve wanted to do that. Thanks for the response on the story. 🙏
Not a bad idea, everyone knows BJ. ( tried to abbreviate, whoops).I just looked him up on Wikipedia , I never knew he had such a great cast of characters. Writing a story, really is a good idea. Now the question is, would you keep him as his cartoon self, or turn him into a Tony Soprano

Great photo of you and Melanie.

And here's one for you, if you haven't seen it: The Alpinist" (2021). About a free solo climber who even Alex Honnold was awed by.

Sorry, I steered you off course , “add” not a typo, just written in haste without proofing. I take full responsibility .
Truthfully, I think that advertisement would be wonderful alongside a more updated version. Definitely an attention grabber.
I flirted with literally telling the story in the cartoon as a 100 story.
It was a great ‘flirt’ , but I do love the version you chose.
Perhaps another vintage ad will inspire a cartoon 100
I considered Bazooka Joe, too.
